Eileen Fisher is opening its second Chicago location in the storefront next door to Sephora on the State Street side of Block 37. The news of Eileen's occupancy comes just a week after Block 37 decided to permanently close off the pedway between the Blue and Red lines at Washington ensuring that commuters walk through the subterranean "hall of temptation" where Beard Papas, Starfruit, Andy's Frozen Custard, and the soon to be iCandylicious stores are.
At this critical time when Block 37 is struggling to fill space, we can't help but wonder what kind of bargaining power the tenant has with lessor, CB Richard Ellis. Now that Loehmann's is gone and non-sensational and non-Chicago-y brands like Wet Seal are moving in, thriving (and hiring in the next few weeks) on State, will Block 37 get hip to the jive of the Loop retail scene and realize that locally-owned retail is meant for the neighborhoods and box retail is fit for the tourists of downtown? Either way, Eileen is coming, the build out has begun, and there are still a few street level spaces nearby that have yet to be leased. — Jared Hatch
