Purveyor of Global Fair Trade Opens on Armitage

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Hinsdale's favorite boutique, The Green Goddess, purveyor of socially concious goods has just barely opened a second location in Lincoln Park on Armitage just west of Sheffield. On their first day of business, we popped in to see the store's selection ranging from dresses, up-cycled antique turkish carpets, handmade chandaliers, jewelry made of vintage buttons, recycled rice bags-turned-messenger bags. Whilst perusing the selection of global goods, we met owner, Elyce Rembos...

Elyce says everything in the boutique has a story and encourages her customers to shop with a conscience, use their dollars to vote, and spend money with their heart. Wether you support small industry or fair trade, or local, you're bound to find something to spend your dollars on in this 4,500 square foot store. Elyce's company donates a portion of each sale to their foundation which supports like-minded charities including women's organizations, children's programs, shelters and eco-friendly groups. The charity is symbolized by a giant color-changing crystal globe which represents the world as a pure, mass of humanity that is diverse and ever-changing.

Some of our favorite items made by local designers include belts by Tina, hand made hand-dyed scarves by Brightly Twisted, and Madonna and Child , a local artist who takes antique religoius medalians, beads, and crosses and makes them into jewelry.

As Elyce explains, the Hinsdale location did not have too much room for home goods so this double wide storefront will sell all home wares including global inspired books, rugs, lighting, pillows, chairs, throws, and even the industrial antique store fixtures, and props are for sale. The store will soon be hosting a promotional event in honor of their opening which they will announce on their Facebook within the next few weeks.
