The New Allsaints is Huge and Beautifully Constructed

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Maybe you saw our twitvid that we took a few hours before the doors of the new Allsaints Spitalfields opened earlier this week. If you did, you'd see that the exterior of the store is a goliath of a storefront branded and spectacular - it commands attention from any vantage point on the avenue.

Once you enter the doors one of the first things that catches your eye is the enormous loom that was in production mode 3 months ago but was hand picked from a factory and freighted overseas.

The lofty ceilings are trussed with steel beams to mimic the elevated rail stations in Chicago but were inspired by Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s designs seen in London’s Paddington and Victoria railway stations. Mid-way through the store part of the ceiling drops down to serve as a brick screen for a video projection produced and designed specifically for the space by Klip out of Philadelphia.

At night time there are scrim projections to light up the sewing machines in the front facade illuminate foyer and shine onto the exterior of the sidewalk. The projection, also made by Klip is concepted after the ideas of sewing and works with 3-D imagery.

The trend-led graphic apparel is displayed on fixtures and artifacts that were, as it was explained to us, 50% reused or reclaimed like looms from factories in England and Turkey and the reclaimed floorboards from a factory in England. The walls are a patina white exposed brick decorated with ram skulls and studio lighting.

Founded in 1994 as a menswear brand, quickly gaining a reputation as the destination for vintage inspired design. It wasn’t long before they branched into the womenswear market in the late 1990s. This is the newest edition to the Allsaints family of stores and is approximately 11,000 square-feet offering a full range of accessories and apparel.
