The Story of the Ghost...Chair

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

"Here...comes the Sun King..." is a lyric that we aren't necessarily fond of (though we love the Beatles), but we like it because it reminds us of Louis XV, the Sun King-- the guy who had a chair immortalize him forever. The chair, the Louis XV chair with its tufted back and wooden arms and legs, got a modern upgrade in 2002 when Phillipe Starck re-imagined it into a clear, lucite form that had a contemporary semblance to the original. That lucite chair, the Louis Ghost (because of its transparent material), has gone on to become Kartell's most popular selling item. Flash forward ten years, and the Louis Ghost shows no signs of disappearing...

In celebration of Kartell's Louis Ghost ten year milestone, some stores are taking notice. One of them is West Town's Euro Furniture, a Kartell retailer. They're offering 10% off of the chair in honor of its ten-year anniversary. But you only have one week to take advantage-- the sale only lasts through Halloween. How spookily apropos. And if you know how expensive these chairs are, you'll jump out of your skin at the chance to get one of these at a discount. Kartell sales are rare...as rare as an actual scary movie...
