AKIRA Chicago did it again--and it was massive. Always one of Chicago's largest fashion events every year since 2002, AKIRA showcased its newest, most on-trend pieces in its fall fashion show. Now for their 10th anniversary show, entitled Métropolitain, more than 3,000 guests and more than 40 models walked the asphalt catwalk at Grossinger, lit with gemstone blues, plums and deep purples and the murmur of the city's most social shoppers.
This year, proceeds from sales were donated toward 5 different Chicago-based charities chosen by AKIRA: Imerman Angels, Project Ladybug, the Human Rights Campaign, Clara's House, & AKIRA's Fashion Scholarship Fund. Hoseted by Miss USA 2012, Olivia Culpo along side Diamond Nexus, and Kelli Zink of CelebTV. With the title Métropolitain, inspired by how we see people in the subway throughout the day, each wave of models showcased a different hour of urban dressing, starting off daytime, progressing into eveningwear.
Because of the enormity of the show and how much stock AKIRA has to buy for all of their stores, the collections were diverse, playing on multiple trends. For women, more attention was placed on the neckline and three dimensional metallic embellishment while for men, colors were earthy with texture with a few mustard yellow and oxblood highlights. There were many hats, statement bags, some great cropped faux furs, and a greater emphasis on showing off the footwear.
