J. Crew Celebrates A Historic Day In Our History

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We're sure that attending the Presidential Inauguration is an otherworldly experience, but some inauguration day fashions (and sales) bring us back to earth. Though we were floored by MObama's fab silk jacquard Thom Browne princess cut coat, and the custom Pucci stunner that Beyonce donned, it was the oldest First Daughter and her coat that got our attention.

On the most American of days, she paid homage to an American label that's affordable, yet eternally chic: J. Crew. *Her mother even accessorized with a J. Crew belt and kitten heels. Malia's coat is of particular importance on this day because here in Chicago, it's the first real day of arctic temps this winter, but we always want to look and feel just as fabulous whether the weather is 70 degrees or 70 below.

Malia's coat was a beautiful cross between fuchsia and magenta and not only looked chic, but was functional as well. The coat is lined with Thinsulate to keep Malia warm in the 30 degree temps, but you'd never guess since the lining is, well, thin--see what we did there? The coat happens to be on sale at J. Crew right now, and since this is the most auspicious of days, J. Crew has marked down their final sale items by an additional 40%. Ka-ching! Now if you want to help the prez boost the economy, we suggest going out to take advantage of the fabulous sale and saluting his fashionable clan.
