Parisan Brand Cotélac Has Strong Chicago Ties (and Discounts!)

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

It sounds like something out of a movie, but happened: 10 years ago, a Chicago couple went to Paris, fell in love with a store, and opened an outpost in Chicago. The Lincoln Park Cotélac boutique was the first one in the U.S.

The brand is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and offering 20 percent (get it?) discounts on the pieces featured here, through November 10. But before you start e-browsing, read up on the brand's history, core philosophy, and staple pieces in our Q&A with Catherine Groener, Cotélac's U.S. Director.

Describe Cotelac's signature style in three words:
Timeless boho-chic

How has the brand evolved in the last 20 years?
Cotelac began with four stores in Paris and has grown to 107 worldwide over the last 20 years. From the beginning Cotélac's identity has been deeply rooted in our unwavering support of artists through various partnerships and collaborations. This season alone we've collaborated with illustrator Brecht Evens on a limited edition capsule collection, Compagne Mpta in our fall/winter 13 look book, and Talisco on a CD through our "Coup De Coeur" program.

What are some pieces from the new collection that are quintessential Cotélac
We're definitely known for pieces featuring our in-house designed prints that we create each season, such as the African fabric inspired "Champs d'elephants" print from the current collection. Some other essentials are a dress or blouse, or one of our alpaca sweaters—we use this fabric every fall/winter season—and our much loved oversized boyfriend coat.

For a beginner Cotélac shopper, which pieces should he/she start with, to start building the Cotélacwardrobe?
We have been using a Japanese woven fabric for several years now that's a great jumping off point into our collections. The dresses, jackets, and pants we've used it on are timeless and perfect starter pieces to a Cotélac wardrobe.

Tell me about the brand's history with Chicago! Why did the first US store open here?
The owners of the Chicago store discovered the brand while vacationing in Paris and fell in love with the collection. We decided to open a Chicago store after they got in touch with the corporate office in France. Little by little, they have developed a clientele and fan base. We are actually celebrating the 10 year anniversary of our Chicago shop!

The items pictured above are all on sale at the Webster Avenue boutique this very minute.
