Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Liz Schneider, the local blogger behind Sequins and Stripes, knows a thing or two about fasion. She's earned a degree in Textiles, worked as a buyer and personal stylist, and in 2011, she started her blog as a way to document her personal sense of style.

We caught up with Liz to talk summer style, wardrobe essentials, and Chicago's shopping scene.

Racked: What was the first (or your favorite) summer item you bought this year?

Liz Schneider: A panama hat! Such a fun summer accessory.

R: Where do you usually shop in Chicago?

L.S.: I am a big boutique shopper. A few of my favorites are Handle With Care, Edith Hart, Intermix, Art Effect, and Perchance.

R: Are there any stores we don't have here that you really love?

L.S.: Hm, I think that people underestimate the shopping in Chicago. We have pretty much everything! I am a big fan of the online retailer ASOS. Patiently waiting for them to open a store in the states!

R: What was your first big splurge for your wardrobe? The Alexander Wang Rocco Bag! She's a beauty.

R: Your blog name is "Sequins & Stripes," which is interesting since stripes are so preppy and sequins are so glam. Do you have any other combinations that you love but are unexpected?

L.S.: I always describe my style as feminine with a little edge, so I am always mixing different elements. I love silky fabrics paired with a good leather jacket, soft floral prints with studded accessories, leopard print and a pop of color - the combinations are endless!

R: What would you say is a huge fashion do? Be confident! It is your best accessory.

L.S.: Which items would you recommend readers splurge on/invest in higher quality goods? I always say invest in the classics, pieces that aren't consider trends but can stand the test of time. My suggestions would be a great pair of jeans that you feel good in, a blazer, a nice white button down, a pencil skirt, a fabulous pair of heels, a classic bag, and a pair of ballet flats.

R: Do you have a favorite color for the summer?

L.S.: I am really into white for summer! A clean crisp palette.

R: What's one current trend you wish would go away?

L.S.: I am not a fan of wedge sneakers! You'll never see me rockin' those.

R: What's your view on old, out-of-style items - save or trash?

L.S.: Personal style evolves and it is important to make sure your closet is filled with pieces that make you feel your best. Every season I donate a bag of clothes to GoodWill. That way your unwanted items becomes someone else's new treasures!
