Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

With locations in Old Town, Lincoln Park, and the North Shore, Shred415 lives up to its name: Give it some time, and it'll shred. you. good. (So we hear. Look, we're beginners, ok?)

Owners Bonnie Micheli and Tracy Roemer (pictured) cooked up a custom, 60-minute workout that alternates between treadmills and weights. How well does it work? Brand new MyZone heart monitors are now available at the Lincoln Park Studio, and will be at all the locations soon. Shredders wear their straps during class, and get an email detailing their progress about 30 minutes later; a few times a week, you'll get an overall fitness report. (Yep, it's all down in writing. So beware the second Three Dots cocktail.)

So, the heart strap is the accessory of the season at Shred415, but what else should be in your getting-ripped wardrobe? Here's the workout gear Micheli and Roemer can't live (or lift) without. "Head-to-toe, we will outfit you in the hottest fitness looks for fall," they vowed. Take it away, ladies.

"Let's start with the foundation. The best workout underwear is from Commando. Our dear friend, Heidy Best of BECLOTHESMINDED, first introduced us to this amazing underwear and now we don't workout in anything else."

"We love the new Splits 59 Power Support bra. It provides amazing support, and the double straps look perfect with any workout top."

"For tops, the L.B.D. of our workout wardrobe is the Run Mile Tank in black. You just can't go wrong with this one!"

"Splits 59 Nova tights are perfect for the cooler days of fall, but still cropped enough to sweat."

"We love the new Solow pants with leather and matching top from for fall. This pant will keep you looking stylish during your post-workout errands. Or, on days you just don't make it to the gym, you can [take the pant] from day to night by slipping on a pair of heels or boots."

"We always accessorize our Shred415 looks. We cannot make it through a work out—or our day for that matter—without Emi-Jay hair ties!"

"We worship Nike Fuelbands! They completely keep us motivated and encourage us to go that extra mile each day."

"Shoes are important for your workout but also for style. We recommend that everyone stop by their local running store for a gait analysis, so staffers can help you identify the shoe that's right for you. For fall we are loving deeper jewel tones for our shoes, and we're shelving our neons for now. Our top three go-to shoes are: the Nike Free 5.0+ for running around between classes; the Nike Free TR Breathe for training; and the Saucony Kinvara 4 for running."
