Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
If this is where workouts are headed, we may just become gym rats. The Chicago Sun-Times caught wind of Pound, an exercise class that's awesome in two significant ways. One, it only lasts about 30 minutes. And two, you get to rock out with neon-green drumsticks.
Called "Ripstix," the workout tools are a quarter-pound apiece. During the class, would-be rock stars drum along to a pop song while doing moves that can include lunges, squats, and isometric holds. Can't quite picture it? The drumming takes place on the surface of the floor, and—frankly?— flowing grace is not the goal here.
The classes take place at several gyms in Chicago, including Lacuna Fitness and FFC Gold Coast. Take a peek at the local schedule here. And this may convince you to sign up: According to the Pound website, a full hour of the activity would burn around 600 to 900 calories.
