Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

First, the bad news. "STOP THE PRESSES! UNCLE FUN IS RETIRING!" says a note on the Lakeview store's Facebook page. (Disappointed? You're not alone.) On the upside, everything in the wacky shop is 50 percent off. And, ask yourself: does store owner Ted Frankel (pictured above) look bummed?

According to his Facebook note, Frankel is retiring to "balmy Baltimore" with his husband and his pup Archie. For the next few weeks, staffers will be bringing in new goods from the basement and warehouse, including antique toys, collectibles, and treasures from Frankel's private collection. "Uncle fun will be taking care of his customers and NO ONE will leave without a smile on their face...come on down and visit," said the ebullient store owner.
