All year long, our pals at Eater tempt us with things that are unmentionable in January. Things like bucatini carbonara and authentic French macaroons. But since it's Fitness Week—and since food editors make resolutions, too—Eater's latest guide gives the lowdown on Chicago's finest juice bars. So if you're in the market for a little cleanse, follow the handy map below, drafted up by Eater Chicago contributor Jeffy Mai. (And resume your sausage-and-beer fest in February.)
The fresh juices, smoothies and nut milks are locally and organically sourced, and made using small batch methods to retain the highest level of vitamins and minerals. ‘Life Support’ is a mix featuring greens, carrot, apple, beet, lemon and ginger while ‘Please, No Autographs’ is a smoothie loaded with nutrients, super foods, complex enzymes and Chinese herbs. In addition, customers can add boosters like wheatgrass and ginger shot as well as try 3, 5 or 7 day cleanse packs or a detox meal plan.
With several locations downtown, Protein Bar is a quick on-the-go option for those in a hurry. The raw juices are designed to help cleanse, detoxify and provide all of the necessary nutrients. Selections include ‘Beetbox,’ apple, cucumber, beet, carrot and ginger; and ‘Greenberry,’ kale, lime, apple, strawberry, cilantro.
The popular vegan restaurant offers an array of ingredients that can be combined for a build-it-yourself juice. Choose from collard greens, pear, tangerine, grapefruit, ginger, cucumber and more. Smoothie options include mixes like peach, oatmeal and almond milk; and avocado, pineapple and coconut water.
Sisters Colleen and Elizabeth Murzyn opened this juicery to create juices that give you the energy to work and play. The fresh organic juices include “Winter Cure,’ loaded with cattor, orange, apple and ginger; while the ‘Juicy Lucy’ smoothie features pear, orange, carrot, pineapple and strawberries. The bar will also work with patrons to design a specific cleanse to suit their needs.
Karyn’a Fresh Corner is a place to “facilitate your individual path towards well-being” through a variety of juices, shakes and smoothies. Start the day off with the ‘Peaceful Warrior,’ carrot, kale, cucumber, spinach, celery, or a shot of wheatgrass or goji juice. Smoothies include ‘Smooth Move,’ coconut water, nut milk, banana, flaxseed and vanilla, or customize your own featuring a liquid base, fruit and choice of supplement.
If you’re looking for something a little different, Earth’s Healing Café has what you need. Made from local and organic ingredients, the aim is to heal the body through therapeutic beverages. Unusual ingredients are in abundance in the ‘Kidney Rejuvenation,’ featuring cucumber, apple, dandelion, parsley and burdock. Or clear out the sinuses with the ‘Orange-Carrot Fire,’ orange, carrot, ginger, jalapeno and cayenne. Juice and smoothie cleanses are also available for purchase as well as a 10-day liver and gallbladder detox, all designed to purify the body.
With a goal of delivering the “highest in quality of fully uncooked, 100% plant-based products,” raw’s best seller is its Signature Green Juice. Other favorites include the ‘Velvety Almond,’ a ‘milk’ blend of almonds with a touch of dates, and the ‘Spirulina Grapefruit’ smoothie.
A favorite in the Loop for many years, Brian’s Juice’s menu may be small but the juices have been perfected to help detox and cleanse. There’s the ‘Green Cleanse,’ with spinach, celery, cucumber, lemon and Romain, as well as ‘Refresh Red,’ carrot, apple, lemon, ginger and beet.
The juice bar at Element Wellness features organic raw juices and superfood smoothies designed to alleviate your condition. ‘Karma’ will help with blood pressure and circulation while Lotus deals with digestion and pain relief.
